Description: Area of Specialization/Thematic Areas: GIS&RS analysis, Emergency Response, Disaster Mapping Overview: UNOSAT is the United Nations Satellite Centre of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). It is a technology-intensive programme active since 2000 in applied research and innovative applications relating to geospatial information technology and satellite analysis, and mapping. UNOSAT also delivers to its beneficiaries tailor made training courses on the use of geo-information technology for humanitarian aid, human security, disaster risk management, territorial planning and environmental monitoring. The Trainee will support the programme´s ongoing satellite-based monitoring and assessment of humanitarian and human security issues. General objectives of the internship: The Trainee will support the UNOSAT disaster mapping team during rapid mapping activations and will also assist in the preparation of training material for the implementation of capacity development activities. Responsibilities/description of professional services: The Trainee will support the programme by: • Undertaking GIS and RS analysis such flood assessment, impact analysis and damage assessment from both radar and/or optical images including the production of maps, situation reports and web services and story maps • Performing geometric processing, calibration and atmospheric corrections of radar data for hydrological applications including floods mapping. • Performing multi-temporal satellite imagery analysis using automated python codes; • Undertaking applied research in order to explore the implementation of data portal of UNOSAT vectors and analysis results. • Contribute to the development of operational dashboards and AI/DL-based results dissemination tools and platform(s); • Undertaking applied research work by searching background information on disaster-related humanitarian and human security crises, testing new tools and methodologies for rapid mapping applications, identifying relevant satellite imagery from online catalogues, developing analytical methods for multispectral imagery, extracting geospatial information from social media sites, and more; • Providing assistance to draft technical reports, communication material and presentations for information sharing sessions and/or training events (when required); • Performing any other duties as required. • Good level of professional english is required.
