We offer:
an innovative work environment with a diverse and passionate team
flexible home-working
Objectives
Translators without Borders/CLEAR Global has an opening for two GIS consultants to support
the analysis and visualization of language datasets from up to eight countries. Under the
supervision of our GIS Specialist, the consultants will curate and map data to be received
from a partner organization in accordance with CLEAR Global’s standards and procedures.
They will provide a brief written summary in English or French of what the data shows.
Background
The resulting datasets will be shared on Humanitarian Data Exchange and the maps on the
CLEAR Global website and disseminated to humanitarian organizations to inform response
planning for 2022. This time-sensitive project feeds into our Language Data Initiative,
which makes data on language readily available to inform humanitarian and development
organizations in their provision of services. Without that data, too often service
providers assume everyone speaks and understands the dominant or official language, and
speakers of marginalized languages struggle to access services and information and make
themselves heard.
Scope of work
The GIS support will be directed by the GIS Specialist, and will need to be responsive to
the speed of data receipt, and potentially to changing priorities for the delivery of
services.
Within those parameters, the specific outputs of this consultancy will be:
4 curated country datasets meeting CLEAR Global’s standards
Static and dynamic maps in the formats previously accorded by CLEAR Global (QGIS, Tableau
and Datawrapper stack at a minimum)
Activities
Under the direction of the GIS Specialist, curate and visualize language datasets received
in line with CLEAR Global standards and procedures
Consult and coordinate with the GIS Specialist and between GIS consultants on the analysis
and visualization of different country datasets to provide a consistent and meaningful
presentation of findings
Prepare static and interactive maps of the assign datasets, and adjust in response to
feedback
Draft a brief written summary of what the data shows, for a non-technical audience with an
interest in the operational implications of the data for humanitarian programming
Support with communications initiatives as needed
Please note that these responsibilities are approximate and may change over time.
Qualifications
The GIS consultants should have strong geospatial analysis skills and an interest in
language in humanitarian action and consultantational development. They should be
enthusiastic about the importance of improving two-way communication with speakers of
marginalized languages. The right candidate is an energetic team player and multitasker
who agrees with TWB´s basic beliefs and values and who can work virtually with team
members based around the world.
Enrolled in or recently graduated (within the last 2 years) from a university degree
program in geography, consultantational affairs, urban planning, geomatics engineering,
peace studies or related field
Strong GIS skills and familiarity with GIS software like QGIS and ArcGIS, visualization
software such as Datawrapper and Tableau. Database management skills with SQL a plus.
Clear written and spoken English; proficiency in French and other languages relevant to
humanitarian action a plus
Attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to multitask, plan ahead and keep track of
tasks
Capacity to work independently to achieve agreed targets
Flexibility and ability to innovate to find creative solutions
